Legendary Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho has left his role as head coach of Fenerbahce, just days after the Turkish giants failed to secure a place in the UEFA Champions League group stage.
Mourinho, who joined Fenerbahce ahead of the 2024/25 season, was tasked with returning the club to Europe’s top competition for the first time since 2008/09. Despite a dramatic comeback win over Feyenoord in the third qualifying round, his side fell short in the playoffs, losing 1-0 on aggregate to Benfica.
Rather than continue with the Europa League campaign or battle Galatasaray for the Turkish Super Lig title, both parties agreed to part ways.
In a short statement, Fenerbahce confirmed:
“Our Professional Football First Team’s technical director, Jose Mourinho, who has been carrying out his duties starting from the 2024-2025 season, has parted ways with us. We thank him for his efforts and wish him success in his future career.”
Mourinho departs with a record of 37 wins, 14 draws, and 11 defeats from 62 matches, his 11th managerial role in a career spanning more than two decades.
What’s next for Mourinho?
Attention has now turned to the Premier League, where Mourinho has already enjoyed spells with Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham.
He has recently been linked with Nottingham Forest, where Nuno Espirito Santo’s strained relationship with the club’s hierarchy has raised doubts over his future. West Ham United could also emerge as a destination if Graham Potter struggles to turn results around.
Some fans have even speculated about a sensational return to Manchester United, should current manager Ruben Amorim depart.
At 62, Mourinho remains one of the most decorated coaches in world football, boasting 1,195 matches and 26 trophies, including league titles in four different countries and two Champions League triumphs. He is also expected to be a high-profile option for national teams preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup
