Ivana Trump, the first wife of former President Donald Trump and the mother of his three oldest children, died on Thursday at her home at age 73.

Manhattan paramedics responded to a call for cardiac arrest on Thursday afternoon and found her unconscious and unresponsive at the bottom of a set of stairs in her apartment on the Upper East Side. She was pronounced dead at the scene

The New York City medical examiner has ruled the death an accident, saying she apparently died from a fall and sustained blunt trauma to her body. There were no signs of forced entry, and the death appeared to be unsuspicious.

“Our mother was an incredible woman — a force in business, a world-class athlete, a radiant beauty, and caring mother and friend,” the Trump family said in a joint statement to news outlets.

“Ivana Trump was a survivor. She fled from communism and embraced this country,” they said. “She taught her children about grit and toughness, compassion and determination.”

Born Ivana Marie Zelníčková, she grew up under communist rule in Czechoslovakia, in a town now known as Zlin located in the Czech Republic. She left the country in the 1970s as a talented skier and model and later married Donald Trump in 1977, according to Vogue.

In the 1980s, Ivana Trump worked as a senior executive in Trump’s business empire and was appointed CEO of Trump’s Castle, one of the hotel casinos in Atlantic City. She also managed the Plaza Hotel and designed interiors for the Grand Hyatt Hotel and Trump Tower.

“I am very saddened to inform all of those that loved her, of which there are many, that Ivana Trump has passed away at her home in New York City,” Donald Trump wrote in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social.

“She was a wonderful, beautiful, and amazing woman, who led a great and inspirational life,” he wrote. “Her pride and joy were her three children, Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric. She was so proud of them, as we were all so proud of her. Rest in peace, Ivana!”

The couple finalized their divorce in 1992 after a lengthy legal battle following Donald Trump’s affair with Marla Maples, who would later become his second wife, Vogue reported. Ivana Trump bought her Upper East Side townhouse, just off Fifth Avenue near Central Park, after the divorce.

Ivana Trump later wrote several bestselling books and built her own business empire, developing a line of clothing, jewelry and beauty products.

In 1995, she married Riccardo Mazzucchelli, an Italian businessman, which ended in divorce two years later. In 2008, she married Rossano Rubicondi, an Italian actor and model, which lasted less than a year.

Along with her three children, she is survived by 10 grandchildren.
