IPOB Publicly Rejects Simon Ekpa’s ‘Biafra Government in Exile’, Calls It Fraudulent and Criminal
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has strongly disassociated itself from the so-called ‘Biafra Government in Exile’ being promoted by Simon Ekpa, a Finland-based self-proclaimed agitator currently facing trial in Finland for alleged terrorism sponsorship.
In an official statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, described the so-called government in exile as the work of mischief-makers with no legitimate link to the Biafra freedom movement. The group made it clear that it does not recognize, support, or endorse the group and warned that it would never be part of what it called a “criminal syndicate.”
IPOB emphasized that under the guiding ideology of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, no genuine Biafran would ever stoop so low as to declare a government “in a barbing salon without the consent of the people.”

In its statement, IPOB strongly criticized Simon Ekpa’s credibility and discipline, accusing him of violating multiple direct orders given by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu before his illegal rendition and continued detention.
IPOB’s Full Statement on Simon Ekpa
“The attention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), under the supreme leadership of Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has been drawn to an utterly deranged and disgraceful narrative gaining traction among the intellectually bankrupt,” the statement read.
“It is insanity to compare Mazi Nnamdi Kanu — who has endured extraordinary rendition, solitary confinement, torture, and relentless persecution — to a self-proclaimed YouTube content creator and coward who publicly denied Biafra in court.
“Let the records show that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu publicly forbade any attempt to form a government in exile, an armed group, or print Biafran currency, ID cards, or passports. Yet this Helsinki-based impostor has violated all these directives for personal gain.”
The statement mocked the notion of declaring a Biafran government “inside a barbing salon in Helsinki” without the consent of the Biafran people, calling it an insult to the serious sacrifices made for Biafran self-determination.
IPOB further stressed that its peaceful struggle for self-determination is rooted in international law and the fundamental human right to self-governance. It described the Nigerian government’s failure to successfully prosecute Nnamdi Kanu, despite multiple amendments to its charges, as evidence of IPOB’s legitimate cause.
No Link to Criminal Activities
IPOB also made it clear that it neither extorts nor kills in the name of Biafra and does not run criminal rackets under the guise of freedom fighting.
“Let it be known globally: IPOB has nothing to do with the so-called ‘Biafra Government in Exile’. We are not criminals, we do not endorse extortion, and we do not manipulate our people for profit,” the statement added.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to the peaceful pursuit of Biafran independence under the leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who it described as “unbroken” despite unlawful detention, torture, and media propaganda.
“When the dust settles, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu shall speak again, and the enemies within and without shall be exposed. Biafra is not a hustle, not for cowards, and not content for YouTube clicks,” IPOB declared.
