Insecurity: Amaechi Accuses FG of Lacking Resolve to Confront Nationwide Violence

Former Rivers State governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has criticised the Federal Government for what he describes as a weak commitment to addressing the escalating wave of killings, kidnappings, and terrorist attacks across Nigeria.

In a statement shared on his Facebook page, Amaechi said the surge in violent incidents has shaken citizens’ confidence and emboldened armed groups. He listed a series of recent tragedies—including the killings in Plateau, the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi, the ambush in Borno that claimed the life of Brigadier-General Musa Uba, an attack on a church in Kwara, and the kidnapping of Catholic priest Bobbo Paschal in Kaduna—all occurring within just one week.

According to him, the government has “failed to provide adequate protection for its citizens,” noting that the absence of decisive action has “emboldened terrorists and eroded public trust.”

Amaechi urged President Bola Tinubu to elevate national security to the highest level of priority. “Your foremost responsibility is to protect lives and property,” he said. “Enough of weak condemnations and looking the other way.”

He called for enhanced military intelligence, improved rapid-response operations, and a willingness to “review failures, make strategic adjustments, and take tough decisions.” Amaechi added that his experience leading Rivers State shows security improvements are possible, and he offered to assist the administration “if called upon.”

His remarks came shortly after Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume suggested that recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump on Nigeria’s insecurity had emboldened violent groups. Trump had accused the Nigerian government of ignoring attacks on Christians and described the country as a “nation of particular concern.”
