Social media influencer Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, tendered an “unreserved apology” on Monday to prominent human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, following derogatory remarks he made against the senior lawyer. The apology comes after VeryDarkMan’s recent involvement in a controversial case involving cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, and alleged bribery claims linked to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Appearing before the Nigerian House of Representatives, VeryDarkMan clarified that he did not believe Falana was implicated in the bribery allegations concerning Bobrisky and the EFCC. He stated, “Apparently now, some people are taking advantage of what is going on to target Femi Falana. Here I apologise. It’s so sad that his name was inside that audio, I couldn’t believe as well. That is the part that irritated me more, which is why I said I refuse to believe that he is a party to something like that.”
The social media influencer had earlier called for a thorough investigation into the matter, emphasizing that his intent was not to defame Falana but to seek clarity. He later revealed that he had received additional information, suggesting that officials from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) were mentioned in connection with the allegations.
Falana, on Wednesday, categorically denied any involvement in the scandal. In a letter dated September 25, 2024, from his legal team at Falana & Falana’s Chambers, signed by Taiwo E. Olawanle, Esq., the lawyer addressed an Instagram post made by VeryDarkMan. The post had alleged that Falana “spoke to Bobrisky in order to divert justice” and that Falana had sought a presidential pardon for the cross-dresser in exchange for ₦10 million.
The letter labeled the accusations as defamatory, accusing VeryDarkMan of tarnishing Falana’s integrity and implying he was involved in deceitful conduct.
In response to the backlash, VeryDarkMan, in an Instagram post, claimed he had more evidence supporting his initial statements, including claims that Bobrisky had served his sentence in a private apartment. However, following the widespread criticism and legal action, he has since retracted his statement and issued his public apology.
The influencer reiterated that his comments were never meant to malign the esteemed lawyer, noting that he was misled by the audio recording and unverified reports that have circulated online.
