Nigeria’s electoral body, Independent National Electoral Commission, has unveiled a fresh timetable for the 2027 general elections, fixing January 16 for the Presidential and National Assembly elections and February 6 for Governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls.
The updated schedule follows amendments introduced by the Electoral Act, 2026, which replaced the 2022 law and adjusted timelines for key electoral activities. Announcing the changes in Abuja, INEC spokesperson Mohammed Kudu Haruna said the revision ensures full compliance with the new legal framework.
According to the commission, party primaries and internal dispute resolution will hold between April 23 and May 30, 2026. Campaigns for Presidential and National Assembly contests will kick off on August 19, 2026, while Governorship and State Assembly campaigns are slated to begin on September 9, 2026, ending 24 hours before election day.
INEC also shifted the Osun State governorship election from August 8 to August 15, 2026, while election activities in Ekiti State will proceed under the revised law.
The commission called on political parties, civil society groups, and voters across Nigeria to work together to ensure credible, peaceful, and transparent elections.
