India Declares Three Days of National Mourning in Honour of Late Pope Francis

Written by SpringNewsNG | April 22, 2025

The Indian government has announced a three-day national mourning period to honour the memory of Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88 on April 21, 2025.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, made history in 2013 as the first pontiff from the Americas and the first non-European Pope in over 1,200 years. Widely respected for his compassion, humility, and commitment to the poor, his passing has drawn heartfelt tributes from leaders around the world.

According to a statement released by India’s Ministry of Home Affairs, the nation will observe a period of mourning from April 22 through the day of the Pope’s funeral. “As a gesture of national respect, the Indian flag will be flown at half-mast on all government buildings, and there will be no official celebrations or entertainment during this time,” the ministry noted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the Pope’s death, describing him as a global beacon of peace and empathy. “Pope Francis will be remembered for his unwavering service to humanity and his profound love for the vulnerable,” Modi said in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter). He also reflected on his meeting with the Pope during the G7 Summit in Italy, calling it a moment of deep inspiration.

India’s Minister of External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar, also conveyed his condolences, praising the late pontiff’s legacy of compassion and international unity.

In line with Vatican tradition, a nine-day mourning ritual, known as “Novendiale,” has commenced. The Catholic Church will soon convene a conclave to choose the next Pope.

Pope Francis’s passing marks the end of an era defined by humility, outreach, and a renewed focus on social justice within the Catholic Church. His influence extended far beyond the Church, touching lives across religious and national boundaries—including those in India, where he was deeply respected.
