President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to commit to productivity and nation-building by embracing agriculture, industrialization, and patronage of locally made products.
Speaking during his nationwide broadcast on Wednesday to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary, Tinubu stressed that the country must shift from being a consumer-driven economy to one driven by production and innovation.
“We must all turn on the taps of productivity, innovation, and enterprise, just as the Ministry of Interior has done with our travel passports by quickening the processing,” Tinubu said. “Let us farm our land and build factories to process our produce. Let us patronize Made-in-Nigeria goods. I say Nigeria first. Let us pay our taxes.”
The president emphasized that both federal and sub-national governments must work together to reposition Nigeria among leading economies worldwide.
Tinubu also acknowledged the hardship triggered by his administration’s economic reforms, including the removal of the fuel subsidy, but insisted that the policies were necessary to prevent economic collapse.
“Though the reforms came with temporary pains, allowing Nigeria to descend into bankruptcy was never an option,” he said, urging citizens to support the government’s efforts toward economic recovery.
