The Rivers State Chairman of the Labour Party, Mrs. Hilda Dokubo, has called on political actors to embrace calm and prioritise peace as tensions rise over the impeachment move against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Dokubo made the appeal on Thursday in Port Harcourt, shortly after an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) stakeholders’ meeting. She described the impeachment notice served on the governor as an unnecessary distraction capable of derailing governance and development in the state.
According to her, Rivers State should be concentrating on recovery and rebuilding following six months of emergency rule characterised by uncertainty, economic strain and stalled development.
She expressed disappointment that the state was being pushed back into political turmoil at a time when stability was gradually returning, warning that such actions undermine collective progress.
Dokubo urged political leaders and stakeholders to set aside personal interests and focus on initiatives that improve the welfare of Rivers residents, stressing that peace remains essential for safety, productivity and social well-being.
She also praised the four lawmakers who reportedly withdrew their support for the impeachment process, encouraging others to reconsider their positions in the interest of unity.
Calling for a sustainable resolution, the Labour Party leader cautioned against short-term political fixes, noting that such approaches often deepen crises rather than resolve them.
Dokubo concluded by appealing for harmony, urging that Governor Fubara be allowed to carry out his responsibilities as governance gradually returns to normal in the state.
