Nigeria’s Power Generation Hits Record 6,003MW as FG Targets 7,000MW with Tariff Hike – Adelabu

Following a record peak electricity generation of 5,801.84 megawatts last week, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has stated that the proposed electricity tariff increase will help push available generation capacity to around 7,000MW.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communication, Bolaji Tunji, the Minister explained that tariff regularization is crucial for unlocking the sector’s full potential and improving power generation and distribution.
“To sustain these improvements, the government must address the tariff shortfalls of N1.94 trillion for 2024 and settle legacy debts of N2 trillion owed to power generation companies (GENCOs). Continuing tariff reforms will ensure consumers pay for the energy they consume,” he said.
He further noted that once tariffs are fully adjusted, Nigeria will move closer to achieving a 7,000MW generation capacity, marking significant progress toward a stable, reliable, and efficient power sector.
Last week, Adelabu announced plans to increase electricity tariffs for customers in Bands B, C, and D. This move aims to boost liquidity in the sector and reduce the government’s subsidy burden, while also narrowing the tariff gap between Band A customers and those in other bands.
According to the statement, available power generation has now reached 6,003MW—the highest in Nigeria’s history. Additionally, the country recently recorded a peak power evacuation of 5,801.84MW and a daily maximum energy output of 128,370.75 megawatt-hours (MWh).
“These milestones reflect the dedication and strategic reforms being implemented under the Minister’s leadership,” the statement read. “They signify a brighter future for Nigeria, where businesses can flourish, households can enjoy uninterrupted power, and economic growth can be sustained. We hope these achievements will be maintained and further improved in the coming days.”
Tunji attributed these successes to ongoing efforts by the Federal Ministry of Power, in collaboration with key industry stakeholders, to tackle longstanding challenges and enhance Nigeria’s power infrastructure.
