Tragedy struck the quiet town of Isseke in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State on Thursday night, May 22, 2025, when unidentified gunmen brutally murdered a family of four in cold blood.
The victims—three women and an elderly man—were killed in their sleep at their residence in Ekwuru Isseke. The attackers reportedly invaded the home under the cover of darkness, carried out the killings without provocation, and fled the scene, leaving the bodies sprawled across the floor.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident on Friday through its spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who identified the deceased as Ichie Kennedy Igboanugo, a prominent community leader known as Ichie Akuruoulo 1 of Isseke, and his family members.
“Preliminary investigations indicate the attack was unprovoked,” Ikenga said. “The joint security team has cordoned off the area and deposited the victims’ remains in the morgue. Investigations are ongoing.”
The police further noted that the attack happened despite intensified joint operations involving the military and other security agencies aimed at flushing out criminal elements in Anambra.
“We are working with available clues to apprehend the assailants. Meanwhile, we extend our condolences to the family and community. Further updates will be communicated,” Ikenga added.
Residents of the area remain in shock as security has been heightened around Ihiala to prevent further violence.
