July 14, 2025 – Panic gripped the Nunya community in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State following a deadly attack by gunmen disguised in Nigerian Army uniforms. The assailants, suspected to be members of a kidnapping gang, killed a soldier and a driver at a construction site operated by a Chinese engineering company.

The incident occurred on July 12, 2025, when approximately six attackers arrived at the site on three motorcycles, wearing military camouflage and armed with assault rifles. Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen opened fire without warning, instantly killing one of the drivers and shooting a soldier who was providing security at the site. The attackers allegedly seized the soldier’s rifle before fleeing the scene.

Investigations suggest the attackers may have crossed into Abia from a neighboring state and are believed to be affiliated with a notorious kidnapping ring. Security sources also revealed that the operation may have been led by a fugitive with military training, who remains at large.

In response, security operatives launched a coordinated search operation across the region. Spent AK-47 shells were recovered at the crime scene, and the remains of the deceased were evacuated to a nearby hospital.

Acting on intelligence, authorities arrested a suspect in Umuahia North Local Government Area believed to have connections to the attack. The individual is currently in custody and undergoing interrogation as efforts to capture other members of the gang continue.

As of press time, the Abia State Police Command has not issued an official statement. Attempts to contact Police Public Relations Officer DSP Maureen Chinaka were unsuccessful.

Security presence has been intensified in the area as the manhunt for the perpetrators continues. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and report any suspicious activity.
