A four-man armed gang launched a daring daylight robbery in Ilorin on Friday, targeting a lone driver in a Toyota Sienna and escaping with millions of naira.

The attackers, who wore masks, fired multiple shots into the air to disperse onlookers before forcibly seizing cash from the victim.

The incident happened around 11:00 a.m. along Murtala Muhammed Way, directly opposite the Vanguard Newspaper office.

Witnesses reported that the gunmen, believed to have trailed the driver, arrived in an ash-coloured Toyota Corolla with a faded number plate. They opened fire on the Sienna with registration number AA 693 GT, blowing out its two left tyres and forcing the driver to halt.

Three armed robbers jumped out of the Corolla, while the fourth stayed behind the wheel to ensure a quick escape.

The thieves reportedly continued shooting into the air, causing panic as pedestrians and residents fled for safety. Stray bullets struck the Sienna driver on the arm and shattered both the front and rear windshields.

Eyewitnesses said the gang transferred “cartons filled with cash” from the Sienna into their Corolla before speeding away.

Another witness decried the absence of security operatives during the attack, noting that no police officers arrived while the incident unfolded.

During the chaos, a journalist, Elder Stephen Oni of The New Telegraph, sustained injuries while attempting to escape the gunfire.

Kwara State Police Commissioner, Adekimi Ojo, confirmed the robbery, saying: “I was informed, and we are working to get the guys involved.”
