GT Bank Debits Customer’s Account Twice for a N94,920 Transaction. One Month After, No Reversal
Omotolani Giwa, a Lagos resident, has told FIJ how Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) failed to reverse N94,920 erroneously debited from her bank account.
Giwa told FIJ that she paid for a service using her GT Bank Mastercard on December 30, and two days later, the bank deducted the same N94,920 she previously paid for no reason.
“I made a transaction of N94,920 using my GTB Mastercard on December 30,” Giwa told FIJ on Monday
“I was debited instantly, but to my greatest surprise, on the 1st of January 2023, I received a debit alert of another N94,920 from my bank for the same purpose.
“I didn’t have up to N94,920 in my account on January 1, so GT Bank placed my balance on minus. From then, every money that entered my account was deducted automatically till it completed that N94,920.”
Giwa said she visited the GT Bank branch in Ilupeju after making a number of calls to the bank. On two occasions, the bank promised to reverse the erroneous transaction but failed to do so.
“I visited the bank in Ilupeju twice and all they did was ask me to fill a form on the two occasions,” Giwa told FIJ.
The first time I went into the bank after several calls was Thursday, January 19.
“My bank told me that I would receive my money after 5 working days. After this, I went back on January 27 and got another 8 working days to wait.
“They said that they could see it on their system, that the other payment was an error. Yet, I haven’t got my money.”
As long as Giwa’s bank account balance is negative, the bank will deduct whatever credit she gets to pay up a debt she does not owe.
GT Bank had not responded to an email from FIJ at press time
