Takoradi, Ghana — Ghana’s Western Region has been hit by a new wave of power outages, with officials now blaming rodents and cobwebs for causing fires and equipment damage at multiple substations.
Details:
The Ghana Grid Company (GridCo) says the blackouts are a result of neglected facilities where rats have chewed wires and cobwebs have triggered electrical fires.
Fire Service Confirms:
ACFO Roberta Aggrey Ghansah, the Western Regional Fire Commander, said: “Lack of maintenance has made these substations vulnerable to fire hazards. We’ve seen firsthand how poor hygiene leads to power failures.”
Areas Affected:
- Sekondi

- Tarkwa and surrounding districts
What’s Being Done:
GridCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have dispatched emergency response teams and pest control units to clean up affected substations.
