Umuahia, Nigeria – July 31, 2025: Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has announced the immediate upgrade of the Umuahia Township Stadium to meet professional football standards, providing a short-term solution for Abia Warriors FC and other local teams.

Governor Otti revealed this plan on Wednesday at his country home in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, during a meeting with Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Ibrahim Gusau, and his delegation.

“Not too long ago, I gave approval to upgrade the Umuahia Township Stadium to ensure it meets the required standard for professional football,” Otti said. “While this serves as an immediate solution, we are also working on the architectural design for a modern stadium city in Umuahia that will serve as a long-term hub for sports development.”

Otti Reaffirms Commitment to Sports Development
Governor Otti emphasized that football and sports are unifying factors in Nigeria, noting that his administration is committed to impactful governance that promotes youth engagement and community pride through sports. He also congratulated President Bola Tinubu on the recent performance of the Super Falcons, reiterating Abia’s commitment to excel in national and international sporting activities.

NFF Commends Abia as a Football Powerhouse
Earlier, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau praised Governor Otti for his support for sports and football in Abia State, describing the state as a home of Nigerian football history.

“Abia has produced some of Nigeria’s greatest football achievements, including back-to-back continental victories,” Gusau said. “The Umuahia Township Stadium is key to sustaining this legacy, and the NFF is ready to provide technical support to ensure the facility meets modern standards.”

Gusau also commended Abia Warriors FC for maintaining its position as one of the top three football clubs in Nigeria, reaffirming the NFF’s partnership with the state to boost sports infrastructure and talent development.

The planned stadium upgrade and long-term stadium city project are expected to revive sports tourism, empower local athletes, and position Abia as a leading hub for Nigerian football.
