Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to free education and merit-based governance, stressing that his government prioritizes excellence over mediocrity.
Speaking at the 75th birthday celebration of former presidential aspirant, Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, held at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Umuahia, Governor Otti highlighted ongoing efforts to provide young people in Abia with access to quality and free education as part of his vision to nurture future leaders.
“We celebrate meritocracy in Abia State. We don’t care where you come from; once you live here, you are one of us. Everyone must have access to free education because we are training future leaders,” Otti declared.
Describing Ohuabunwa as one of Nigeria’s finest patriots, the governor praised his principles, integrity, and achievements, noting his rise from joining Pfizer in 1978 to becoming the company’s Managing Director and CEO within 15 years.
He commended Ohuabunwa’s courage in aspiring for the presidency in 2023 despite challenges, adding that the celebrant remained a source of inspiration to many.
In his remarks, Ohuabunwa attributed his successes to God’s grace and guidance. He also launched his new book, Driven by Revelation & Inspiration – My Journey through the 2023 Nigeria Presidential Aspiration and Matters Arising, where he reflected on his political journey, challenges within Nigeria’s leadership system, and the need for true reform.
According to him, genuine political transformation may not be achievable in 2027 but could be possible by 2031, provided Nigerians embrace a new breed of leaders untainted by godfatherism or corrupt practices.
“I believe change is possible, but we need leaders who are not beholden to godfathers or shrines. Governor Alex Otti is an example of such leadership,” he said.
The event, chaired by former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Ike Nwachukwu, was attended by prominent figures including Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah (represented by Deputy Governor Barr Ifeanyi Ossai), former Anambra Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Dr. Peter Obi, former Minister of Mines and Steel Dr. Uche Ogah, ex-Rivers Governor Chief Celestine Omehia, President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide Senator Azuka Mbata, and HRH Eze Eberechukwu Oji of the Eze Aro Kingdom, among others.
