The State of Georgia, United States, has conferred honorary citizenship on former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, in recognition of his contributions to leadership and governance advocacy.
Obi made the announcement on Friday through a statement on X (formerly Twitter), following his participation in a series of engagements during the Black Congressional Week in Washington, D.C.
According to Obi, the day’s activities began with the Congressional Black Caucus Week Reception at the U.S. Senate Kennedy Caucus Room, hosted by Senators Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock. He noted that Senator Warnock encouraged him to share perspectives on African democracy and sustainable development.
Obi also held strategic discussions with Kim Clark, Chief Executive Officer of Georgia Power, the state’s largest independent power company, focusing on energy generation and distribution opportunities.
In addition, he participated in the One Voice Africa forum, an advocacy platform dedicated to protecting the dignity of Black immigrants. At the event, Obi urged stakeholders to champion good governance across Africa, stressing that the continent’s vast potential can only be realized through visionary and responsible leadership.
Highlighting the day’s events, Obi described the conferment of the Honorary Citizenship of Georgia as a moment of personal significance and a reaffirmation of his commitment to building a “New Nigeria” anchored on integrity, accountability, and inclusive growth.
“For me, the day’s engagements were about learning, sharing, and strengthening my resolve to contribute towards a Nigeria that works for all,” Obi stated.
