Fresh Protests Erupt in Rivers State Over Governor Fubara’s Suspension

by springnewsng April 22,2025

Tensions escalated in Rivers State on Tuesday as hundreds of residents staged fresh protests in Port Harcourt, demanding the immediate reinstatement of suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The demonstrators, dressed in black attire to symbolize mourning and resistance, began their peaceful march from Aggrey Road in the old township area. They carried bold placards with inscriptions like “We stand with Governor Sim Fubara,” “Give us back our elected leader,” and “Sim Fubara represents the will of Rivers people.”

Governor Fubara was suspended on March 18, 2025, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. Alongside the governor, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu and key members of the State House of Assembly were also removed from office.

The Federal Government, through a presidential statement, defended the action, citing allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and threats to public peace and state stability as the rationale behind the emergency measures.

However, the suspension has triggered a wave of unrest and public backlash across the state. Tuesday’s protest marks the latest in a series of grassroots demonstrations opposing what many describe as a politically motivated decision.

“We voted for Fubara, and we want him back,” one protester said. “This is not just about politics—this is about respecting the voice of the people.”

While some civil society groups and political actors have voiced support for the presidency’s decision, others argue it undermines democratic principles and the electorate’s mandate.

Security personnel were strategically deployed to monitor the protest and ensure it remained peaceful. As of press time, there were no reports of violence or clashes during the demonstration.

Despite growing pressure from citizens and activist groups, the presidency has yet to issue any response to the renewed demands for Governor Fubara’s reinstatement.
