Fresh Attack in Plateau: Two Killed, Five Injured as Armed Assailants Raid Community

A new wave of violence has hit Plateau State as armed attackers stormed another community in Riyom Local Government Area, killing two people and leaving five others injured.
President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Solomon Mwantiri, confirmed the incident and identified one of the victims as Dalyop Dangyang, a youth leader known for mobilising young residents to form a vigilante group to protect the village.
According to Mwantiri, locals described the assailants as armed herders operating through newly formed networks across parts of the state.
“This is yet another coordinated attack in Riyom and neighbouring LGAs. This violence must not continue unchecked. Authorities need to take firm action to secure our communities and restore peace,” he said.
Some residents alleged that fresh armed groups recently moved into the area, heightening fears of renewed hostility. Mwantiri expressed concern that previous alerts and warnings have failed to curb the attacks.
He added that just four days earlier, six residents of Kwi community in the same council area were killed in a separate attack linked to Fulani militants. That incident occurred around 9:50 p.m. on Saturday, hours after a farmer, Kurang Daniel, was shot dead while harvesting maize at about 4:00 p.m.
The attackers reportedly rode on motorcycles and were suspected to have come from Fass, a nearby settlement.
Mwantiri also accused some herder groups of making false claims to security agencies, alleging their cows were harmed by locals. However, he said no evidence had been found to support those allegations after a thorough investigation by community members.
He urged security agencies and government authorities to respond proactively and prevent further bloodshed in the affected communities.
