Former President Muhammadu Buhari Dies in London: Tinubu Sends Shettima to Repatriate Body to Nigeria

LAGOS, NIGERIA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confirmed the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in London at approximately 4:30 p.m. after a prolonged illness.
In response, President Tinubu has dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima to the United Kingdom to accompany the late leader’s remains back to Nigeria.
President Tinubu, who expressed deep sorrow over Buhari’s death, has spoken directly with the former First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, to convey his condolences. He also ordered all national flags to be flown at half-staff across the country as a sign of national mourning and respect.
Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, following an earlier tenure as military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985.
The Federal Government is expected to announce official funeral arrangements in the coming days.
