Former Personal Assistant Convicted Of Murdering Founder Of Nigerian Motorbike Company, Gokada In U.S. Court

Haspil had reportedly confessed to the police that he killed his boss because he did not want his French girlfriend, Marine Chaveuz, to find out about the theft and leave him.

Tyrese Haspil, the former executive assistant of tech CEO Fahim Saleh, was found guilty of murder on Monday for killing his boss in 2020 to cover up the theft of $400,000

According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, Haspil not only killed Saleh but also decapitated and dismembered his body in an attempt to conceal his crime, CNN reports.

Fahim Saleh, a 33-year-old venture capitalist and CEO of Gokada, a motorbike startup based in Nigeria, was murdered by his executive assistant, Haspil, 25, to prevent the discovery of a massive embezzlement scheme

Prosecutors alleged that Haspil had stolen approximately $400,000 from Saleh and killed him to avoid being exposed.

Haspil had reportedly confessed to the police that he killed his boss because he did not want his French girlfriend, Marine Chaveuz, to find out about the theft and leave him.

SaharaReporters had reported that prosecutors said investigators discovered a Makita saw, demolition bags containing human remains, including limbs, and a receipt from Home Depot inside Fahim Saleh’s residence, revealing the gruesome details of the crime scene.

A jury delivered a verdict on Monday, convicting Haspil of various charges, including one count of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree grand larceny, and one count of second-degree burglary, in addition to other charges, as stated in the District Attorney’s office statement.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said he hoped the accountability delivered by the verdict “can provide a measure of comfort to Mr. Saleh’s loved ones as they continue to mourn his loss”.

Haspil is scheduled to be sentenced in September, according to the official statement. According to the District Attorney’s office, Tyrese Haspil initiated two fraudulent schemes to embezzle funds from Fahim Saleh’s companies in the fall of 2018.

Haspil created multiple financial accounts, including a PayPal account, to divert funds into his own accounts, and also fabricated financial statements and transactions to avoid detection by Saleh

Although Haspil, who started working as Saleh’s executive assistant in May 2018 resigned from his position in May 2019, he continued to steal money from Saleh’s companies, the release stated.

In January 2020, Fahim Saleh discovered one of the fraudulent schemes and confronted Tyrese Haspil, his former mentee, about stealing $35,000 from his company. Saleh offered a settlement, allowing Haspil to repay the debt over two years to avoid criminal charges.

However, Haspil used funds from another fraudulent scheme, involving a PayPal account, to make the payments, ultimately embezzling nearly $400,000.

Fearing Saleh would uncover his ongoing embezzlement, Haspil plotted to murder his former boss, believing that killing Saleh would prevent him from testifying against him in court, according to the District Attorney’s office.

On July 13, 2020, Haspil attacked Fahim Saleh in his Lower East Side condominium, using a taser and stabbing him multiple times, according to the official statement.

The next day, Haspil returned to the scene to dismember Saleh’s body and clean up evidence, but briefly left the apartment, allowing Saleh’s cousin to discover the gruesome remains, with the victim’s head and limbs severed.

Haspil was deterred from re-entering the apartment by the presence of police outside.

He was subsequently arrested in Manhattan on July 17
