In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through the political landscape of Maharashtra, Baba Siddique, a former minister and prominent politician, was shot dead in Mumbai on Saturday. The 66-year-old lawmaker was targeted outside his son’s office as he was about to enter his vehicle, sustaining multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.

According to NDTV, three assailants approached Siddique on foot and opened fire, striking him several times. Eyewitnesses reported the rapid succession of gunfire, causing panic among bystanders. Despite being rushed to Lilavati Hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival due to the severity of his injuries.

Police confirmed that no other individuals were injured during the attack, and they are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the area to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the shooting. As the investigation unfolds, law enforcement has already made significant progress, arresting two suspects and launching a manhunt for a third individual involved in the attack.

Gang Connection and Political Shockwaves

Initial reports indicate that the arrested suspects claimed affiliation with a gang led by the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi, who is currently incarcerated on various charges, including orchestrating multiple killings. This connection raises concerns about the growing influence of organized crime in Maharashtra and its intersection with local politics.

Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar, who belonged to the same party as Siddique, expressed his shock over the “cowardly attack.” In a heartfelt post on X, he stated, “The NCP has been devastated by the tragic loss of Shri Baba Siddique, a leader deeply loved by many.” Pawar lamented the personal loss he felt, having known Siddique for years, and urged restraint amid the grief, asking that the incident not be politicized.

“This is not a time for division or for exploiting the pain of others for political advantage. Our focus must be on ensuring that justice is served,” he emphasized, calling for unity and compassion during this tragic period.

Political Career and Legacy

Baba Siddique was a well-known figure in Maharashtra politics, having served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for three consecutive terms from 1999 to 2009. He held the position of Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies, Labour, and FDA from 2004 to 2008 and was also a municipal corporator for two terms in the early 1990s. Earlier this year, he made headlines by leaving the Congress party after nearly five decades and joining the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), a move that showcased his adaptability in the ever-changing political landscape.

Known for his extravagant parties and social gatherings, Siddique was not only a politician but also a figure of significant cultural influence. His untimely death is expected to reverberate throughout the political community in Maharashtra, prompting discussions about security measures for public figures amid rising violence.

Community and Family Mourning

The news of Siddique’s assassination has shocked his family, friends, and constituents, who remember him as a dedicated leader committed to public service. As investigations continue and suspects are pursued, the community mourns the loss of a prominent figure whose legacy has shaped Maharashtra politics for decades.

With the upcoming state elections looming, Siddique’s death raises pressing questions about the safety of political figures in the region and the ongoing threat posed by organized crime. The calls for justice are growing louder as the public demands accountability and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
