Gombe State, Nigeria – In a devastating turn of events, 33 communities across Gombe State have been severely impacted by a flood that has destroyed more than 2,500 houses. The flood, which began after days of torrential rainfall, has left thousands of residents displaced and struggling to cope with the aftermath.

According to local authorities, the floodwaters breached riverbanks and inundated homes, farms, and infrastructure, leading to widespread damage and loss. The worst-hit areas include communities in the Akko, Yamaltu Deba, and Funakaye Local Government Areas, where residents are now facing the daunting task of rebuilding their lives.

Emergency response teams have been deployed to the affected areas, but the scale of the disaster has overwhelmed local resources. Many families have been forced to seek refuge in makeshift shelters or with relatives in neighboring communities, while efforts to provide relief materials, including food, water, and medical supplies, are ongoing.

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, visited some of the affected areas and expressed deep concern over the extent of the damage. He assured residents that the state government would work tirelessly to provide support and assistance to those affected by the disaster.

“Our hearts go out to all the families who have lost their homes and livelihoods in this tragic flood. We are mobilizing all available resources to ensure that relief reaches every affected person,” Governor Yahaya said during his visit.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had earlier issued warnings of potential flooding in the region, but the severity of the situation caught many by surprise. Experts are now urging the government to implement more robust flood management strategies to mitigate future disasters.

As rescue and relief operations continue, the full extent of the damage is still being assessed, with fears that the number of affected homes and communities could rise. The Gombe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has called on the federal government and international organizations to assist in the recovery efforts.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines as the rainy season continues, with more downpours expected in the coming weeks. The situation remains fluid, and authorities are closely monitoring the weather patterns to prevent further tragedies.
