Five Killed, Several Kidnapped as Boko Haram Launches Coordinated Overnight Raids in Borno

Boko Haram fighters carried out a series of coordinated assaults on communities in Borno State on Sunday, leaving at least five people dead and abducting several others. The attacks targeted villages in Konduga and Gwoza Local Government Areas, where farmlands and settlements remain vulnerable to insurgent activity.

Multiple sources confirmed that the raids resulted in the destruction of a military base and injuries to several civilians. According to BusinessDay, the renewed violence heightens fears over rising insurgent movement around farmlands since the commencement of the harvest season.

A member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), Jidda Muhammad, said the first attack happened around 1 a.m. in Mayenti, a well-known onion-farming community in Malari ward. The attackers rode in on eight motorcycles, shooting one farmer and kidnapping two others. During a gunfight with local security volunteers, one of the abducted victims was killed while the insurgents fled with the second.

A few hours later, another group of insurgents stormed Shettimari, also in Konduga LGA. They moved across farmlands near the roadside around midnight and seized eight farmers — many of them already displaced people trying to rebuild their livelihoods.

Muhammad explained that improved security in Konduga town has pushed the terrorists to target surrounding villages instead. He added that the CJTF urgently requires additional equipment to defend the communities effectively.

Konduga, located roughly 36 km from Maiduguri, remains one of the most affected areas during the farming season as insurgents repeatedly attack farmers working in remote fields.

In Gwoza LGA, residents reported an attempted incursion into Izge around 11 p.m. on the same night. Although the attackers failed to penetrate deeply into the town, they overpowered troops stationed there and burned down a military base.

Resident Hadiza Abdullahi confirmed that four people — two men and two women — were killed, while four others sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital in Michika. She said the community is pleading for strengthened security and the reconstruction of the destroyed base.

“They want the military base rebuilt so that soldiers can return,” she said. “The military is their only source of protection.”
