An early morning fire destroyed at least 44 shops and stores at the popular Singa Market in Kano State on Monday.

The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi. The fire reportedly started around 5:00 a.m., following an emergency alert from Mubarak Muhammad to the fire control center.

“Upon arrival, our team found a one-storey building, Alhaji Abdulmunafi Yunusa House, measuring approximately 150 by 150 feet, completely engulfed in flames,” the statement said.

Abdullahi explained that 25 temporary shops at the front of the building and 19 stores on the upper floor were completely destroyed. Firefighters, however, managed to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to 24 other upper-floor stores and all ground-floor shops.

The operation faced challenges due to poor road access caused by parked trailers, delaying the team’s movement to the scene. The response was led by Fire Service Director, Alhaji Sani Anas.

During investigations, building head Ambassador Garba Ibrahim Mai Maggie and security officer Malam Ibrahim revealed that the entire structure relied on a single electric switch.

“Findings indicate that the switch was poorly managed, and we strongly suspect that an electrical fault originating from the temporary shops triggered the fire,” the statement added.
