A devastating fire on Tuesday destroyed goods worth several millions of naira at the popular Bariga Market in Lagos State.
The blaze, which razed 26 key-clamp shops, was eventually contained through the swift intervention of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and other emergency responders.
Eyewitnesses said the inferno started in one of the shops before spreading quickly to nearby stalls, fueled by the wooden partitions used in constructing many sections of the market.
Although the exact cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed, preliminary investigations suggest it may have originated from faulty electrical wiring or careless handling of flammable materials.
According to LASEMA, their rapid deployment of personnel and equipment prevented the flames from spreading to adjoining sections of the market and helped avert secondary outbreaks.
Fortunately, no casualties were recorded, but traders counted heavy losses as their shops and merchandise were reduced to ashes.
Officials said assessments are ongoing to determine the full extent of damage and provide relief measures for affected traders.
