Telecommunications equipment valued at several millions of naira has been destroyed in a fire outbreak that gutted a mast belonging to a telecom company in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The incident occurred at Maple Leaf Drive, Alalubosa GRA, Alesinloye area of the city on Sunday, October 5, 2025.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Hon. Maroof Akinwande, said the fire was caused by electrical sparks from a generator.

According to him, “The distress call came in at exactly 9:50 a.m. on Sunday through a telephone call. Our officers were immediately mobilized and dispatched to the scene.”

He explained that on arrival, the team discovered that the generator and panel inside the telecom cell site were already engulfed in flames.

“Our firefighters quickly swung into action, contained the fire, and prevented it from spreading to other sensitive communication equipment within the premises,” Akinwande said.

He confirmed that no casualties were recorded, adding that preliminary investigations indicated that the fire originated from electrical sparks in the generator unit.

The quick response of the fire service was credited with averting what could have been a major disaster, as the mast serves a key communication hub in the area.
