England’s interim boss Lee Carsley got the perfect response from his squad as the Three Lions cruised to a 3-1 victory over Finland in their UEFA Nations League League B Group 2 clash. This much-needed win came just three days after a shocking 2-1 defeat to Greece.
With goals from Jack Grealish, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Declan Rice, England bounced back with confidence, while Finland’s Arttu Hoskonen scored a late consolation to deny Dean Henderson a clean sheet.
After England’s poor showing midweek, Carsley made six changes, including restoring Harry Kane as captain and bringing in Angel Gomes and Grealish. The changes paid off as Grealish opened the scoring in the first half after being fed a well-timed through ball by Gomes. England dominated possession and looked far more stable than they had in their previous game.
Despite moments of pressure from Finland, Markku Kanerva’s side lacked the cutting edge to make their chances count. Fredrik Jensen squandered a golden opportunity to level the score early in the second half, and England took advantage of Finland’s profligacy.
Trent Alexander-Arnold extended the lead with a stunning free kick in the 74th minute, followed by Declan Rice’s close-range finish, sealing the result for England. Hoskonen’s late header slightly marred an otherwise dominant display by England.
Man of the Match: Jack Grealish
While Alexander-Arnold’s free-kick was the standout moment, Grealish’s overall contribution was invaluable. His composed finish, three key chances created, and 97% passing accuracy were vital to England’s control of the match. Grealish has now scored twice in three games under Carsley and continues to shine in the winger role.
