Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has been seen attending an art exhibition in London, putting to rest speculations about his health and alleged medical trip abroad.

A video shared by presidential aide Bayo Onanuga on social media captured Edun engaging in conversation at the O’DA Art Gallery stand during the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, held at Somerset House, London, from October 16 to 19.

The fair, regarded as one of the world’s leading showcases of modern and contemporary African art, features artists, galleries, and collectors from across Africa and the diaspora. Nigeria’s representation came through O’DA Art Gallery, which exhibited a collection titled “Lines of Spirit.” The showcase includes works by Nigerian artists Simon Ojeaga, Paul Majek, and Afeez Onakoya, exploring cultural identity, spirituality, and heritage through vibrant contemporary styles.

Visitors at the fair praised the Nigerian section as one of the most expressive, describing it as “vivid” and “rich in storytelling.” Edun’s attendance, many noted, added prestige to the event and underscored Nigeria’s growing cultural influence and use of art as a tool for soft diplomacy.

Reacting to public concerns, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed that the minister’s trip was officially sanctioned.
“Finance Minister Wale Edun visited an art exhibition in the UK. He is on an officially approved short break from the rigours of managing the Nigerian economy,” Onanuga stated on X.

Reports earlier suggested that Edun had been unwell, prompting a change in Nigeria’s delegation to the World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C. In his absence, Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso led the Nigerian team to the meetings focused on the country’s economic reforms and partnerships.

While officials did not specify the nature of Edun’s ailment or how long he would remain abroad, his public appearance at the London event appears to have eased growing concerns over his health and capacity to continue in office.
