Fidelity Bank Plc has further demonstrated its commitment to grassroots development and child empowerment with the distribution of educational and hygiene materials to pupils of Wesley Nursery and Primary School in the Makoko Waterfront Community, Lagos, through its Fidelity Helping Hands Programme (FHHP).
The outreach, driven by the Bank’s Risk Management Directorate, formed part of a Back-to-School initiative designed to enhance learning conditions and encourage proper hygiene practices among schoolchildren in one of Lagos’ most vulnerable riverine communities. Under FHHP, Fidelity Bank employees identify community needs and receive matching financial contributions from the bank’s management to implement impactful social interventions.
A total of 124 pupils benefitted from the programme, receiving school bags, exercise books, writing materials, towels, soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes—items aimed at supporting academic performance while promoting healthy living.
Speaking at the event, Divisional Head, Remedial Assets, Fidelity Bank Plc, Dr. Damian Orizu, representing the Executive Director and Chief Risk Officer, Mr. Kevin Ugwuoke, noted that the initiative reflects the bank’s belief that sustainable business success is inseparable from community wellbeing.
“At Fidelity Bank, we understand that our long-term growth is closely connected to the wellbeing of the communities we serve,” Dr. Orizu said. “By investing in education and hygiene, we are helping to lay a strong foundation for the future of Makoko’s children, which is essential for lasting development.”
He added that the FHHP showcases the dedication of Fidelity Bank staff to driving meaningful change. “I commend the Risk Management Directorate for leading this intervention. It clearly shows that corporate responsibility is most effective when it begins from within the organisation,” he said.
Also speaking, the Baale of Adogbo (1) Community, Makoko, Chief Victor Panke, expressed appreciation to Fidelity Bank for its continued interventions, highlighting the daily challenges faced by children in the community.
“This support will greatly reduce the burden on our children and their families,” Chief Panke said. “Many pupils cross the lagoon daily under difficult conditions just to attend school. We sincerely thank Fidelity Bank and appeal for further support, especially in providing boats to improve safe access to education.”
The outreach marks Fidelity Bank’s third intervention in Makoko within the past two months. Through the Fidelity Helping Hands Programme, the bank continues to promote education, hygiene, and sustainable community development, with particular attention to underserved and high-risk communities.
