The Federal Government has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) to plan and coordinate activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary.

According to a statement issued by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, inaugurated the committee and charged members to deliver a befitting celebration that reflects the nation’s unity and progress.

Akume emphasized that Independence Day goes beyond celebrating the past, stressing that it should serve as a call to action for the future.

“This anniversary is a reminder of where we are coming from and where we are going. Nigeria has faced political, economic, and social challenges but has also overcome many of them. We must recommit ourselves to building a nation where every citizen feels valued and empowered,” the SGF said.

The 65th Independence anniversary activities will kick off with a World Press Conference on Thursday, September 25, 2025, followed by a Juma’at service and women’s activities on Friday, September 26. Other highlights include youth-focused programmes and a historical arts exhibition on Saturday, September 27, a church service on Sunday, September 28, and a public lecture on Monday, September 29. The celebrations will climax with the presidential broadcast and the Independence Day Parade on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

As part of the commemorations, Akume unveiled the Nigeria @65 Compendium Project, an initiative by CherryAfrica Magazine in partnership with the SGF’s office. The project will document Nigeria’s milestones across governance, the economy, and social development, featuring a state-of-the-art studio for interview series with top government officials.

The SGF urged Nigerians to celebrate the nation’s achievements over the past 65 years while remaining hopeful about the future under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
