Nigeria Secures $1 Billion in International Funding to Boost Healthcare Reform Under Tinubu Administration
The Federal Government of Nigeria has secured over $1 billion in concessional financing and grants to support sweeping reforms in the country’s healthcare system. This was announced by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziag Salako, during the BusinessDay Health Conference held in Abuja on Thursday.
Dr. Salako revealed that the funding was made possible through enhanced strategic partnerships with global development partners including the World Health Organization (WHO), World Bank, USAID, UNICEF, UNFPA, the Global Fund, and TARGET.
“This funding reflects our commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s healthcare system, not just as an administrative priority, but as a national development imperative,” Salako stated.
He emphasized that under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, health is seen not as an expense, but as an investment in national productivity, security, and economic growth.
As part of its transformation plan, the government has adopted a Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp) to align all domestic and international health resources under a unified framework. This model is designed to enhance efficiency, reduce duplication, and improve donor coordination.
“SWAp enables better governance of resources and ensures that all partner efforts support Nigeria’s core health priorities,” Salako explained.
To address Nigeria’s chronic healthcare workforce shortages, Salako also announced that the government has:
- Increased admissions into medical schools
- Expanded training capacity in health institutions
- Recruited over 50,000 health professionals across federal health institutions
The government is also taking steps to curb the medical brain drain through the implementation of a Health Worker Migration Policy and digital workforce tracking platforms, which are expected to improve retention and workforce planning.
This landmark funding marks a significant step forward in Nigeria’s healthcare journey and reinforces the country’s commitment to universal health coverage and sustainable health system reforms.
