August 26, 2025 — The Federal Government, through the National Flood Early Warning Centre (NFEWC) of the Ministry of Environment, has placed nine northern states on high alert over imminent flooding expected between August 25 and 29, 2025.
The warning was issued in a circular signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management Department, cautioning that intense rainfall in some parts of the North could trigger severe flooding.
The affected states include Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Borno, and Adamawa, with the Ministry urging residents and emergency stakeholders to remain vigilant and report any flood-related incidents.
According to the circular, Adamawa and Katsina have the highest number of flood-prone towns flagged for possible impact. In Adamawa, Mubi, Shelleng, and Abba-Kumbo were listed, while in Katsina, Katsina town, Kaita, and Bindawa were placed on the watchlist.
Other towns at risk include Gwaram (Jigawa), Nafada (Gombe), Ngala (Borno), Sumaila (Kano), Anka (Zamfara), Makira (Sokoto), Azare and Jama’are (Bauchi).
“Certain northern settlements are likely to experience heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding within the period August 25 to 29, 2025,” the Ministry warned. “We call on relevant stakeholders on the Centre’s platform to give feedback of any emerging situation in their various states.”
The Centre noted that this fresh alert comes after a similar flood warning in seven northern states earlier this month, when communities along the floodplains of the River Niger were advised to evacuate due to rising water levels.
Authorities have urged residents to take preventive safety measures and relocate from high-risk flood zones where necessary.
