The Foundation for Environmental Rights Advocacy and Development (FENRAD), a prominent human rights and pro-democracy group based in Nigeria’s South-East, has declared its full support for the planned Abuja rally organized by activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, calling for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a statement signed by Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, FENRAD’s Executive Director, the organization described the rally as “timely and necessary,” citing the federal government’s continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu despite several court rulings ordering his release.

“As part of our unwavering commitment to civil liberties, justice, and the rule of law, FENRAD stands with all democratic voices urging the Nigerian government to obey its own courts and honour its constitutional and international human rights obligations,” the statement read.

FENRAD warned that ignoring judicial orders undermines Nigeria’s democracy and erodes public trust in the justice system.

“The continued incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu in defiance of court rulings sets a dangerous precedent. No democratic system can survive when the judiciary is disrespected,” it added.

The group said it had engaged key political stakeholders across the South-East — including governors, federal lawmakers, and members of the Abia State House of Assembly — on peaceful resolutions to Kanu’s detention. However, it emphasized that beyond dialogue, coordinated public action is now crucial.

FENRAD praised Hon. Obinna Agwuocha, a member of the House of Representatives, and Abia legislators for their intention to engage the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) on the matter but urged broader and bolder national participation.

“We commend the courage and consistency of Mr. Omoyele Sowore, and call on all human rights defenders, civil society groups, and democratic-minded Nigerians to join the Abuja rally in solidarity,” Nwafor stated.

The organization reiterated its three-point demand:

  1. Immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
  2. Respect for judicial authority and adherence to all court rulings.
  3. An end to political persecution and suppression of peaceful expression.

FENRAD confirmed it is mobilizing its members and partners to participate in the rally, urging Southeast leaders to either attend physically or declare open support.

“This is a defining moment for justice and democracy in Nigeria. Justice delayed is justice denied. No one is truly free until everyone is free,” the statement concluded.
