FBI, CIA, and U.S. Agencies to Release Drug Case Files on President Tinubu on May 2 Following Court Order

Multiple U.S. government agencies—including the FBI, CIA, and the Department of State—are set to release investigative files on Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s alleged drug trafficking links on Friday, May 2, 2025. This development follows a recent court order mandating the release of documents tied to a long-standing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit.

The ruling, issued by U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell in Washington D.C., declared that the continued withholding of the requested files was “neither logical nor plausible,” paving the way for the long-awaited public disclosure.

The lawsuit was filed by Aaron Greenspan, a U.S. transparency advocate and founder of the public records platform PlainSite. Greenspan accused the agencies of violating FOIA guidelines by failing to release the requested documents within the statutory timeline. He filed 12 FOIA requests between 2022 and 2023 across six major federal agencies, including:

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)

Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)

Department of State

Internal Revenue Service (IRS)

Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)

U.S. Attorneys’ Offices in Indiana and Illinois

Greenspan specifically requested records concerning alleged drug trafficking investigations involving President Bola Tinubu and three associates—Lee Andrew Edwards, Mueez Abegboyega Akande, and Abiodun Agbele—linked to activities in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

“This is a win for government transparency and the public’s right to know,” Greenspan said, emphasizing that citizens of both the United States and Nigeria deserve access to the full history of any past criminal inquiries related to a sitting foreign president.

While some heavily redacted documents have emerged over the years, many key records have remained classified, fueling ongoing debates and speculation in Nigeria regarding President Tinubu’s past.

President Bola Tinubu has consistently denied any involvement in drug trafficking or related criminal activities
