Fayose Blasts PDP Faction: ‘Embassy Protest an Embarrassing Display of Desperation’

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has lambasted a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members who staged a protest at the United States Embassy in Abuja, describing the action as a disgrace and a “final gasp from a failed National Working Committee.”

Fayose said the suspended National Chairman, Umar Iliya Damagum, and his allies behaved like “political tax collectors,” adding that if they were serious, they should have travelled to Washington to demonstrate outside the White House rather than waving placards in Abuja.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Fayose questioned why the group was attempting to drag foreign nations into internal party issues.

He asked whether it was anyone’s fault that “Damagum and his team of political undertakers” refused to comply with the PDP constitution.

A court ruling last Friday had ordered the PDP to complete certain internal processes — including pending state congresses — before convening a national convention.

Fayose said the faction should have focused on resolving internal disputes instead of suspending key NWC members, including the National Secretary, who is constitutionally empowered to issue notices for party meetings.

He also noted that the group worsened the crisis by engaging in legal battles over party representation in court, even though the PDP constitution clearly states that only the National Legal Adviser has the authority to represent or appoint lawyers on behalf of the party.

“So how does their refusal to follow due process become the responsibility of the United States or any other country?” Fayose asked.
