According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident occurred when a Mack truck, with registration number MUS 729 XY, suffered brake failure and lost control, crashing into a minibus popularly known as Korope.
Tragically, the minibus driver died instantly at the scene, while three passengers were rescued by LASTMA officials and promptly handed over to Lagos State emergency medical services for further evaluation. Although the rescued individuals showed no immediate signs of physical injury, they were taken in for precautionary checks.
The crash caused significant traffic congestion, obstructing major parts of the Old Ipaja roadway and spilling over to adjoining streets such as Shofunde and Olufunlayo. LASTMA personnel swiftly intervened with effective traffic diversion measures to minimize gridlock.
In a swift follow-up action, the truck driver attempted to flee but was apprehended by LASTMA officers and handed over to the Nigeria Police. Officers from Elere Division and Area ‘G’ Command were present to secure the scene and assist with crowd control.
Multiple emergency response agencies, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS), and the Nigeria Police Force, worked collaboratively to recover the deceased, clear the wreckage, and restore normalcy to the area.
Speaking on the tragedy, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, expressed deep condolences to the victim’s family and emphasized the urgent need for stricter safety compliance among heavy-duty vehicle operators.
“Truck operators must ensure all vehicles—especially those carrying heavy loads—undergo comprehensive mechanical inspections before plying public roads. Most of these accidents are preventable, and it is unacceptable to continue losing lives due to negligence,” Giwa stated.
He further reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s dedication to enforcing road safety laws, enhancing emergency response capabilities, and mandating regular inspections through the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) to ensure all commercial and articulated vehicles meet roadworthiness standards.
