FAAN Orders Tanker Drivers, Bus Operators, and Others to Vacate Lagos Airport Road Over Safety, Environmental Concerns

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has directed tanker drivers, limousine operators, commercial bus parks, and other unauthorised businesses operating along the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) road in Lagos to vacate the area immediately, warning that enforcement will begin soon.

FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, issued the directive during a press briefing at the agency’s Lagos headquarters as part of activities marking the 2025 FAAN Safety Week.

Kuku expressed disappointment that despite repeated notices and direct engagements, several illegal operators continued to occupy the airport corridor, describing their activities as dangerous and environmentally harmful.

“We have persistent encroachers—tanker drivers, limousine and bus operators—who have refused to leave despite several warnings. Their presence poses major safety and environmental hazards,” she said.

According to her, the unauthorised activities have caused obstruction to traffic flow, environmental pollution, and poor sanitation around the airport axis.

Kuku revealed that FAAN, in collaboration with the Lagos State Government and federal security agencies, had completed an environmental and sanitation audit to identify all encroachers ahead of the cleanup operation.

“The clearance exercise will be carried out soon, and relocation is now unavoidable,” she warned.

Highlighting the broader risks of poor environmental practices, Kuku noted that waste accumulation and unsanitary conditions near the Lagos and Abuja airports attract wildlife—especially birds—raising the risk of bird strikes, a major flight safety concern.

She reaffirmed FAAN’s commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and compliant airport environment through collaboration with stakeholders, including host communities, airlines, and regulators.

As part of the 2025 FAAN Safety Week, Kuku also led a session on Safety Management Systems (SMS), emphasizing operational excellence and compliance with global aviation standards.
