Manchester United is exploring options to replace Ruben Amorim after the Portuguese coach’s departure following a disappointing 1-1 draw against Leeds United, leaving the Red Devils sixth in the Premier League table.

Amorim’s 14-month tenure ended amid reports of internal tension and limited progress, with the former Sporting CP manager winning just 31.9% of his matches at Old Trafford. The club issued a brief statement citing the need for a change to maximise their Premier League finish.

According to Fabrizio Romano, former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has shown interest in returning to Old Trafford in a caretaker role. The Norwegian is reportedly willing to take the position regardless of the contract length while the board searches for a permanent replacement. Solskjaer has been out of work since leaving Turkish side Besiktas in August 2025 and is considered by some as a stabilising figure for the squad.

In the meantime, Darren Fletcher will take charge of United for their upcoming Premier League fixture against Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday. Fletcher, the club’s Under-18 coach, has been tasked with steadying the team during the managerial transition.

United’s leadership, led by Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox, continues to evaluate long-term candidates, including Oliver Glasner, as they seek a manager who can align with the club’s recruitment strategy after Amorim’s exit over transfer policy disagreements. With challenging fixtures against Manchester City and Arsenal approaching, a swift appointment is seen as crucial.
