Baltasar Engonga, the Director-General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF) in Equatorial Guinea, was taken into custody following a high-profile scandal involving allegations of extramarital relationships with influential women, including the sister of the country’s president. Engonga, a 54-year-old economist, was arrested amid a sweeping fraud investigation that led authorities to search his home and office on short notice.

During the raid, anti-graft officials uncovered hundreds of CDs, each containing incriminating evidence of his relationships with numerous women, many of whom were married to high-profile officials. These tapes captured encounters with several high-ranking figures, including his brother’s wife, his cousin, the President’s sister, the wife of the Director-General of Police, and spouses of ministers across more than 20 different government ministries.

Shockingly, some scenes were allegedly filmed in his ANIF office, with reports claiming one of the videos showed Engonga in compromising acts beside the national flag. This revelation has since sparked a media firestorm, with explicit videos reportedly leaking onto social media, further fueling public outrage and national embarrassment.

Local news outlet Ahora EG broke the story, reporting that Engonga, widely known by his alias “Bello,” had recorded these liaisons over the past year. According to the report, his actions constitute one of the largest and most scandalous abuses of power in the nation’s history.

In response to this scandal, the government has vowed to take firm disciplinary measures. In a statement, the Executive expressed hopes that Engonga’s case would serve as a clear message about the standards of conduct expected of public officials in Equatorial Guinea. The government is reportedly moving toward reform measures intended to reinforce a culture of respect and integrity within its public and private sectors.

With the ongoing circulation of these videos on social media, Engonga’s arrest not only places a harsh spotlight on systemic corruption within the country’s institutions but has also led to an unprecedented dialogue on accountability among top officials.
