EPL: Arne Slot Explains Why Liverpool Lost 3-1 to Chelsea Despite Being Premier League Champions

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has offered insight into why his team suffered a 3-1 defeat to Chelsea in Sunday’s Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge, despite having already clinched the league title.

The match saw Chelsea dominate key moments, with goals from Enzo Fernandez and a late penalty by Cole Palmer. A first-half own goal from Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah compounded the Reds’ struggles, while Virgil van Dijk managed to score a consolation goal for the visitors.

In his post-match interview, Slot admitted that Liverpool lacked sharpness and intensity in the attacking third.

“They were a constant threat on the counter-attack, but they have a very good team—well-organised and filled with quality individuals,” Slot said.

He went on to emphasize that although Liverpool improved in their build-up play compared to earlier in the season, the final product was lacking.

“In the final third, we were not aggressive enough and missed a few percent needed to score. A wise man once told me, ‘nothing good comes from losing a football game,’ and that’s exactly how it feels.”

Slot acknowledged Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca’s tactical setup and praised the Blues’ defensive organization and speed in transition.

Despite the loss, Liverpool’s Premier League title remains secure, having sealed their championship on April 27 with a decisive victory over Tottenham Hotspur. Sunday’s match served more as a test of squad depth and form heading into the final weeks of the season.

The result lifts Chelsea’s hopes for a top-four finish, while Liverpool turn their focus to upcoming fixtures and potential silverware in other competitions.
