Enugu Unveils Locally-Made Green Stove to Promote Safe Cooking and Protect Environment

The stove, branded as the “Enugu Stove,” is produced entirely with local content and runs on smokeless, odour-free coal briquettes. The design was developed by the Scientific Equipment Development Institute (SEDI) and comes in three sizes — for students, families, and commercial users.
Speaking to journalists in Enugu, the Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Lawrence Eze, said the stove is built with safety in mind. Its dual-chamber system keeps heat insulated, ensuring the outer surface remains cool even while cooking. This innovation, he noted, will help eliminate the dangers of gas explosions and kerosene-related accidents.
Eze also emphasized the stove’s affordability, explaining that while buyers only need to purchase the stove once, the coal briquettes — produced from purified, dehydro-carbonised Enugu coal — are inexpensive and readily available.
“This is one of the most economical cooking options,” he said. “It produces no smoke, is odourless, and works just like an electric stove without heating up the entire kitchen environment.”
To ensure steady supply, the government plans to establish four briquette-processing factories across the state’s senatorial zones, converting raw coal into safe fuel for households and businesses.
Eze added that the project would reduce tree cutting for firewood and charcoal, curb environmental degradation, and promote a greener, safer energy mix for Enugu and beyond.
