Enugu Police Nab Robbery Suspect Posing as NYSC Member to Evade Arrest

The Enugu State Police Command has apprehended a 25-year-old armed robbery suspect, identified as Chinecherem Ugwuagu, who disguised himself in a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform in a failed attempt to escape police detection.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the suspect was arrested on October 11 along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway by officers attached to the Safer Highway Patrol Unit.
Ndukwe explained that Ugwuagu was caught while trying to flee on a stolen Carter motorcycle, which he had reportedly snatched earlier that morning after invading a victim’s home at 9th Mile, Udi Local Government Area.
During the operation, police recovered from him a fake pistol fashioned from a lotion container, an ATM card, clothing items, and other personal belongings taken from the victim.
“The suspect had used the imitation weapon to threaten his victim before fleeing the scene. He later changed into an NYSC uniform to avoid being stopped at security checkpoints, but our officers immediately saw through the disguise,” the police spokesman said.
He added that preliminary investigations confirmed Ugwuagu’s involvement in the robbery, and the suspect will be charged to court once inquiries are concluded.
Commending the officers for their vigilance, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reiterated the Command’s unwavering resolve to rid Enugu of criminal elements.
“We will not relent in our efforts to ensure the safety and security of all residents in the state,” CP Giwa affirmed, urging citizens to continue supporting law enforcement with timely and credible information.
