Enugu Police Arrest 38 Suspects Over Killing of Catholic Priest Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya

The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 38 individuals linked to the brutal murder of Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya, a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, revealed that Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has directed a full-scale manhunt to track down all those responsible for the crime.

According to the statement, police operatives attached to the Udenu Area Command carried out coordinated raids and bush-combing operations in identified hideouts and criminal hotspots. These operations led to the arrest of 38 suspects and the recovery of incriminating evidence. The suspects are currently being profiled and interrogated.

Commissioner Giwa extended condolences to the family of the late priest and the Catholic community, assuring that every effort will be made to ensure justice is served.

Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya was attacked and killed on the night of September 19, 2025, along the Eha-Ndiagu Eha-Etiti Road in Eha-Alumona, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State. His death has sparked outrage and mourning across the Christian community in the region.
