The #EndBadGovernance Movement has announced plans for a nationwide protest on December 10, 2025, to mark World Human Rights Day, citing escalating repression and systematic violations of democratic rights under President Bola Tinubu’s government.

In a statement released Wednesday, November 19, the group’s spokesperson, H.T. Soweto, said the protest is “inevitable due to the increasing attack on democratic freedoms and the suppression of peaceful assembly under the Tinubu regime.”

The movement accused the government of rolling back democratic gains achieved since Nigeria returned to civilian rule in 1999, claiming that freedom of speech and the right to protest have been severely curtailed.

The statement highlighted cases of protesters still facing harsh consequences, including Michael Adaramoye, Daniel Akande, and nine others, who remain charged with treason for participating in August 2024 demonstrations. According to the group, these individuals spent 59 days in detention, with bank accounts frozen and personal tools like laptops and phones retained by the police.

The movement also cited ongoing trials of activists, journalists, and bloggers across states like Katsina, Gombe, Kaduna, and Kano, asserting that dissent continues to be criminalised.

“The time to fight back is now. Mobilisation begins today,” the group declared.

Key demands include:

  • Immediate release of all protesters, activists, journalists, and human rights defenders, including Omoyele Sowore and Isah Mokwa.
  • Halt the persecution of labour activists like Abiodun Bamigboye and Andrew Emelieze.
  • End harassment, unlawful arrests, and use of anti-terrorism or cybercrime laws to silence dissent.
  • Respect freedom of assembly and expression without restricting protests to designated areas.
  • Address police abuses, sack IGP Kayode Egbetokun, and compensate victims of human rights violations.
  • Stop forced demolitions and land grabs, and ensure adequate compensation for displaced citizens.

World Human Rights Day, observed annually on December 10, commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. In Nigeria, the day has often been a focal point for civil society campaigns against government abuses and security force brutality.

The planned protest comes amid rising economic hardships, inflation, and unemployment, with civil society organisations raising concerns over the shrinking civic space and harsh treatment of peaceful protesters.

The #EndBadGovernance Movement, formed after the August 2024 nationwide protests, appears poised to spark national mobilisation reminiscent of the 2020 #EndSARS movement, despite more restrictive conditions
