El-Rufai Seeks Answers from Ribadu Over Alleged Import of Highly Toxic Chemical from Poland

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has written to the Office of the National Security Adviser, demanding clarity over reports that a dangerous chemical substance was imported into Nigeria.
In a letter dated January 30, 2026, addressed to Nuhu Ribadu, El-Rufai said he was acting “as a concerned citizen” in seeking transparency over the alleged procurement of about 10 kilograms of thallium sulphate — a colourless, odourless compound known for its extreme toxicity.
According to El-Rufai, information circulating within opposition political circles suggested that the substance was acquired by the Office of the National Security Adviser from a supplier in Poland. He stressed that thallium salts are globally recognised as hazardous materials and are subject to strict controls due to the serious risks they pose to human life and the environment.
He argued that, given the nature of the chemical, the public deserves clear explanations on why it was imported, how it would be used, and what safeguards are in place to prevent misuse or accidental exposure.
In the letter, El-Rufai requested detailed clarification on the purpose and end-use of the substance, the exact quantity involved, and the identity of the foreign supplier. He also asked about storage conditions, security measures, and handling procedures put in place upon the material’s arrival in Nigeria.
Additionally, the former governor sought confirmation on whether key regulatory and public health agencies were involved in overseeing the process. He specifically mentioned the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, noting that coordination with such bodies is essential for public safety and environmental protection.
El-Rufai concluded that transparency on the matter was necessary to maintain public trust, uphold democratic accountability, and reassure Nigerians that appropriate regulatory and security frameworks are being followed.
