Doctors at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti, have issued a strike threat following the assault of two of their colleagues by students who were brought in after a road accident.

The President of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), EKSUTH chapter, Dr. Ayodeji Olatayo, condemned the incident while addressing journalists in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday. He described the attack as “uncivilized and unacceptable,” stressing that the state government must identify and apprehend the culprits before 6 p.m. tomorrow or face industrial action.

Dr. Olatayo emphasized the need for patients and their relatives to show respect to medical personnel, warning that further acts of violence against doctors would not be tolerated.

Similarly, former NARD president and current chairman of the EKSUTH Inter-Allied Forum, Dr. Adeyemi Famous, urged lawmakers to pass legislation criminalizing assaults on healthcare workers. He argued that such a law would serve as a deterrent and protect medical professionals from recurring violence.

He recalled that doctors had been attacked in the facility weeks earlier, insisting that security agencies must arrest and prosecute offenders to set an example.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Friday when students involved in an accident were rushed to the Accident and Emergency Unit. Dissatisfied with the medical attention given, the students allegedly turned violent, injuring two doctors in the process.
