A canoe accident in Jigawa State has claimed the lives of eight young girls after their boat capsized while crossing the Zangwan Maje River in Taura Local Government Area.
The tragic incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. on Saturday when 15 children were traveling from Zangwan Maje to Jijin Gunka amid strong winds and overflowing river currents.
According to local sources, seven children were rescued alive, while the bodies of the eight victims, all girls, were later recovered and handed over to their families.
Strong Winds and Flooded River Blamed
Residents told Zagazola that the mishap was likely caused by river overflooding and violent windstorms, which overwhelmed the small canoe.
Community members and local divers swiftly responded to the accident, aiding in the rescue of survivors and retrieval of the victims’ remains.
Authorities Issue Safety Warning
Following the tragedy, local authorities have warned residents to avoid crossing swollen rivers during the rainy season and to use life jackets or safer transportation alternatives to prevent future mishaps.
The incident underscores the recurring dangers of river travel in flood-prone rural communities, particularly during Nigeria’s peak rainy season.
