Tragedy struck on Thursday morning as at least eight people lost their lives in a devastating multiple-truck collision on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, near Kara Bridge, outward Lagos.
The accident, which occurred around the Berger axis, involved several heavy-duty vehicles. One of the trucks reportedly fell into the Kara River, while two others collided and caught fire, sending thick black smoke into the sky and causing a massive traffic gridlock on the busy route.
Emergency responders, including officials of the Nigeria Police Force and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), were immediately deployed to manage the situation and coordinate rescue operations.
Eyewitness footage aired on TVC captured the chaotic aftermath, showing burning wreckage as emergency teams battled the flames and cleared debris to reopen the expressway.
In a statement posted on its official X handle, LASTMA confirmed that eight fatalities were recorded in the accident.
“There was a multiple road crash involving a truck and a container-laden trailer, both of which went up in flames. Another truck spilled its load of biscuits, while one plunged into the river from the bridge, blocking all lanes inward Mowe. Eight casualties were confirmed,” LASTMA stated.
The agency added that rescue and recovery efforts were ongoing, as the crash caused severe congestion stretching from Berger to Ogunnusi Road.
This incident marks the second major truck accident in Lagos within a week. Last Saturday, a six-tyre truck lost its brakes and plunged off the Oshodi Bridge, injuring one person and causing significant damage.
Authorities have urged drivers, especially truck operators, to ensure regular vehicle maintenance and strict adherence to traffic safety regulations to prevent further tragedies on Lagos roads.
